American Fantasy Sports

Fantasy sports was not specifically mentioned in the UIGEA, which prohibited other forms of online gambling and remained in gray area until sports betting and other forms of online gaming became legal after the Supreme Court decision that ended the UIGEA. Fantasy Sports was given a conditional carve-out under the UIGEA, which excluded certain fantasy contests from the definition of unlawful internet gambling, but it operated in a gray area until more than 20 states enacted specific daily fantasy sports or paid-fantasy regulations in the late 2010s. The fantasy sports market remains significant, but its relative growth has slowed as regulated sports betting has expanded nationwide and absorbed much of the sports-wagering demand.
